Congrats on your new car! If you’re a first-time car owner, you’re probably filled with excitement to finally get behind the wheel of your very own car and drive wherever you want. It’s important, however, to take some time and really understand the responsibilities involved with owning and operating a vehicle.
Obviously you need to drive as safe as possible because the roadways are incredibly dangerous, but you also need to know how to properly take care of your vehicle as well. Here are some important things to keep in mind in terms of taking care of your vehicle for first-time car owners:
- Remember to get your oil changed -- If you neglect your car's oil change needs, you run the risk of completely ruining your engine. Most newer engines have recommended oil change intervals between 5,000 and 7,000 miles. Similarly, older vehicles should have their oil changed and checked every three months (or 3,000 miles).
- Fuel filter replacement -- Eventually, your vehicle might be in need of a fuel filter replacement. Your best bet is to visit a professional auto shop. Unless you have extensive knowledge in the auto industry, which is probably not the case, you really should consult with a professional for some of the more complicated auto aspects.
- Glass care -- A lot of vehicle owners take ignore minor glass breaks but that can lead to some serious future problems. Even the smallest crack can transform into a major break and lead to expensive repair costs or even entire windshield replacements. If you notice anything wrong with your car's windshield, take your car to a professional glass repair shop.
- Tire rotations -- It's best to have your tires rotated every time you take your vehicle to get an oil change. You need to make sure your tire pressure is sufficient at all times as well.
